I often think about Mary Magdalene in the bible. I LOVE Mary. Other than Jesus she is my favorite person in the bible. Think about it!! She is the only woman (of very few) spoken about by name in the bible. I mean yeah there was Eve, then Noah's wife, Lot's wife, Noah's children's wives'. A lot of women written about in the bible are "helpmeets". They were simply there as a supporting character in the story because their spouse was the highlight. Yeah there are women like Jezebel (I always think of prostitutes when I think of that name. Seriously, has anyone seen a floozy and called them a "Jezebel" or is that just a southern thing?). When I think about Jezebel I think about "Jolene" that Queen Dolly was begging not to take her man. Like yes Jezebel, you are beautiful and all the men just LOVE you and I totally respect that and I'm happy for you. But can you PLEASE not take my man? Some of us out here can't get a good man just with a wink and a smile. Some of us have to work for it. I worked HARD for my man Jolene!! Please don't take him. He's mine!! There are also women like Delilah, the one who cut off her man's hair and betrayed him for some money or something which ended with him getting killed. Basically, she was a grimy, ratchet, itch with a prefix. Do you remember that girl in the Tyler Perry movie? The one that had Bow Wow in it. He had a baby with a girl like Delilah. She was always coming around asking for money and threatening to take him to court for more child support. Meanwhile, she's dressed in designer clothes, her hairs did, 5 inch nails and he's living with his mama working two jobs just to pay her child support. UGH We don't like "Delilahs" and if my son brings one home, I will flip my lid!!
Don't forget sweet Mother Mary; now, SHE is important. So important that an angel came down and said, and I'm paraphrasing, "Yo Mary, God is so happy with your rizz. You've devotion to god has been giving mad loyalty vibes" I'm kidding, of course. We all know the story and what the Angel said to Mary. Now Mary is special don't get me wrong. But, Mary Magdalene's story was hands down one of the best in the bible. This girl didn't have ANYTHING. She had been left alone with no family to speak of and remember, women were only important in the bible if their family, husband, or sons were important. Not my girl Mary Mag!! They said she had DEMONS inside of her!! One of the men who tried to cast out her demons was scared to death! She was an alcoholic, prostitute who would be violent when her "demons" would come out. There was no helping her. Everyone had given up...she was a lost cause. Then one day this redneck from Nazareth comes in and she rejects his advances because he's just another douchebag trying to take advantage of her. Then he calls her by her name. Not the one the demons had given her....he called her by her God given name, Mary of Magdala. That's all it took. She was rid of her demons and was so thankful that she followed Jesus every step of the way and she was the best "ride or die" a person could ask for. Shoot, after Jesus died, Peter had gone back to fishing and the others went back to the life they had before Jesus came into the picture. Mary didn't have anyone to go back to. Jesus WAS her rock. She didn't have anyone to keep her from falling back to the demons she had before. She went back to the only place she knew peace, back to the tomb where his body lay. Peep this, she was SO important that the Angel appeared to her and said "He ain't here no more! He is rizzin. Go tell everybody!!!". It was Mary's responsibility to tell everybody the great news that Jesus wasn't dead, he was alive. Now why on God's green earth did he get a depressed, alcoholic, prostitute to go spread that great news about her Savior??? I tell you why. Until you've battled demons like addiction, depression, anxiety, and immense grief, you can't truly appreciate how special God thinks you are. My god is so great that he is willing to use the broken to help spread his love. We aren't meant to condemn others for the way they battle their demons. We are meant to let them know that we see them. We KNOW they are a child of God and they have a purpose. They have a name in the Book of Life just like the rest of us. It's our duty to encourage them to keep their name there.
